Threads of Intention with Toru Hirama of PLATFORM

A few years ago, at the height of the pandemic, we came across the subtlely iconic work of Toru Hirama and PLATFORM. With what seems to be endless variations of carry in the world, Toru's stand out with their simple forms and details – hiding a technical and precise construction.

Sanpo Studios: Toru San, thanks for taking the time to answer a few of our questions – can you share a little about yourself and PLATFORM?
What personal experiences or interests initially inspired you to start making outdoor bags and every day carry? How has your vision evolved since you started?

How do your outdoor adventures inspire your work?
We've been following your progress for a couple years and it's always seemed very clear to us that there is a shared vision between each of your designs. How do you think about the design of your products?
What has been most exciting about starting and building your business? What has been most challenging?
You've recently released an all new product, unlike any other item we've seen – can you share a little bit about the "Sandal Book"? What inspired this product and what is most exciting about it for you?
